Polyvinyl chloride
Rigid PVC is a hard, amber-colored material; precise properties depend on formulation.
Plasticised PVC can be made flexible by selection of type and proportion of plasticizer..
Dissolved by: tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, dymethylformamide,
also by mixture of acetone/(carbon disulphide, carbon tetrachloride, or benzene).
Plasticized by primary plasticizers (phtalates, phosphates, sebacates and fatty acid
derivatives)and polymeric plasticizers (adipates, sebacates or azelates of propylene glycol).
Relatively unaffected by water, alkalis, nonoxidising acids, hypochlorite solutions, aliphatic
hydrocarbons.
All PVC polymers are degraded by heat and light; hydrogen chloride is eliminated and
oxidation occurs.
Combustion: burns but is self extinguishing.
